- Latin scintilla (spark/ glimmer) was used figuratively for a particle of fire or a spark; in Old English scinan came to mean ‘to shine’, incl. to distinguish oneself, in the 17th century it could mean ‘least particle, trace’ – and that’s how it made it to our design no. 85 name.
