These designs are named after the Greek nymphs believed to dwell in the night sky and associated with rain. Ancient Greek sailors used these stars for navigation, as their heliacal rising marked the start of the sailing season. The word Pleiades is thought to derive from plein (πλεῖν), meaning “to sail” in Greek.
